The Aston Inaugurals celebrate and showcase the research expertise of the University’s newly appointed professors across a diverse range of topics.  

The second lecture in the series will be given by Professor Alison Hodge from Aston University's School of Engineering and Applied Science on Tuesday 12th March 2013.

From submarines to satellites… and everything in-between

My initial research involved specialist microelectronic devices, such as those now in computers, phones and cameras. As a Civil Servant, we had to explain how our developments would improve (or perhaps hinder!) the systems in which they would be used.

But research became a small part of my work, as the lab was privatised, we had to earn income from customers. I led large groups - from apprentices to world-leading scientists and engineers – with a wide range of “clean-rooms”, dedicated facilities and operational and training systems, in collaboration with academia, institutes and companies internationally.

My career has been serious yet fun, varied yet focused, challenging yet exciting. Had I planned to become an Associate Dean in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Aston University? There were some decision points, but I could never have predicted the outcome; and I can’t re-run this experiment!  

All of the Aston Inaugurals will start at 6.00pm and will be held in the Sumpner Lecture Theatre located in the Main Building on Aston University campus which is just a short walk from the Centre of Birmingham.

The event is free to attend and open to all. Complimentary tea and coffee will be served from 5.30pm and a buffet will follow the lecture.
